Samsung officially announces Galaxy Round
Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy Round, one of the first smartphones with a curved OLED display to enter the mass market. The smartphone is similar to the Galaxy Note 3, with a 5.7-inch 1080p display and leather-like back – except for one thing, the screen looks like the beginnings of a taco or tortilla.
Inside you’ll find a 13-megapixel rear-camera, 2-megapixel front-camera, 2.3GHz quad-core processor, 3GB RAM, 2800mAh battery, LTE-A, and Android 4.3 as its operating system. The Galaxy Round features a 7.9mm thick build that weighs 154g. All pretty solid specifications that align closely to Samsung’s other flagships, though weighing less than the Galaxy Note 3.
Under the hood, we’re looking at a very capable device. Notable specs from the Samsung Galaxy Round include:
- 5.7-inch 1080p OLED curved display
- 2.3GHz Exynos quad-core processor
- 3GB RAM
- 13MP camera
- 2,800mAh battery
- 7.9mm thick, 154g
- Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
a smartphone based on the company’s flexible plastic display that allows the phone to sport a slight curve from left to right. The device is launching in South Korea via SK Telecom on October 10 in “Luxury Brown” for 1.09 million won, or roughly $1,000 USD.
Samsung reports that the curved form factor enables features like Roll Effect, which allows the user to check information such as the date, time, missed calls and battery easily when home screen is off (see video below). There’s also Gravity Effect that enables visual interactions with the screen by tilting the device, and Bounce UX for users to easily control their music.
There’s no news on a western release as yet, but the Samsung Galaxy Round is hitting its native South Korea in “Luxury Brown” tomorrow for 1.09 million won (which is about £632).
